The Six Most Common HVAC Myths Debunked

by | Jun 24, 2022 | HVAC Tape, Industry

Fact or Fiction? The truth about common HVAC Myths

HVAC tape can be an effective tool, but there are many false claims that have emerged about what it is and how it works. A properly-functioning HVAC system is vital for any building, so it’s important to correct these misconceptions before you begin your project.

Myth #1: All tapes can be used for all materials and environments

Fiction! HVAC tapes are made with specific applications in mind to ensure the best performance possible. Using the wrong tape can result in air leaks, system failure, poor air quality, and a shortened lifespan for your HVAC system. Make sure to choose the right HVAC tape for your application and environment.

Myth #2: Duct tape can never be used for HVAC applications

Fiction! While most duct tapes are not designed for HVAC applications, there are some that are specifically designed to be used in them. Always make sure you’re checking manufacturer specifications to choose the right tape for the job.

Myth #3: You need to worry about full system closure

Fact! Full system closure (meaning the system is sealed properly and without air leaks) is the number-one goal for HVAC installation and maintenance jobs.

Myth #4: You don’t need to wipe as you apply HVAC tape

Fiction! Most HVAC tapes are pressure-sensitive; this means they require pressure to create a permanent bond. Use a squeegee to firmly wipe down the tape, guaranteeing maximum surface contact for secure adhesion.

Myth #5: Tape flagging is a sign of failure

Fact! Tape flagging always indicates that either the wrong tape was used, the tape was not correctly applied, the tape lacked quality, or the tape was out of date. Regardless of which of these caused the flagging, it leads to the same problems: system inefficiency, costly callbacks and more.

Myth #6: HVAC tape can “go bad”

Fact! The proper way to store HVAC tape is on its side with the core facing up. It should be kept on a shelf or in a storage area away from dirt and debris. For the best possible performance, don’t use tape that is more than a year old.
